Immorality has caused disasters : Minister

Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Communications and Informatics Minister Tiffatul Sembiring said natural disasters that had continued to take place of late had something to do with the people`s moral decadence.

In his sermon to thousands of Muslims attending an Idul Adha prayer service here on Friday, the minister said that natural disasters in the country had taken place one after another in various parts of the country such as Garut, Tasikmalaya, Cianjur and West Sumatra.

These disasters forced people to be evacuated and spend the nights in emergency tents. Quakes that rocked the country had caused damage to thousands of houses and mosques, with many of them left in uninhabitable condition.

He said that the sinful deeds that were being increasingly committed in the country had created immorality and led people to forget God and ignore His commandments.
The minister said many people today were only afraid of other human beings, no longer of the Creator of the earth, heavens and the universe.

He said according to a recent survey, at least 500 pornographic video compact discs (VCDs) available in the market now had been produced by Indonesians. And even more saddening, he said, was the fact that the actors and actresses in the blue videos were Indonesian secondary school students.

"Where is our responsibility in guarding the morality of our children? Will we be able to answer God`s questions," he said.

In addition, there were persons who dared to serve as case brokers (Markus) in courts which were basically law enforcing institutions.

On Judgement Day, he said, these people would be helpless because their mouths would be locked while their legs and hands would testify about what they had done during their lives on earth.(*)
