VP supports House inquiry into Bank Century
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Boediono said he supported the initiative of a group of legislators to have the House of Representatives (DPR) conduct an inquiry into the Bank Century case.
"I support the House inquiry initiative. I am sure the government will pass the test by explaining many things in and around the case," the vice president said here on Wednesday.
The vice president was speaking to the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents` Club (JFCC) to explain the government`s stance on the initiative of a group of legislators to establish a special inquiry committee to probe the dibursement of Rp6.7 trillion in funds to rescue ailing Bank Century.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his address on Monday night asked police to investigate the Bank Century case and expose the flows of bailout funds.
One day later, the faction of the ruling Democratic Party in the House said it was also supporting the inquiry initiative in the bank case, in spite of the fact that previously the faction firmly rejected the initiative.
Boediono said the government and Bank Indonesia (BI/the central bank) had decided to bail out the bank in a legally accountable way.
He said that the decision to bail out Bank Century was made due to global financial crisis at the time.
