Lack of data hampers W Sumatra earthquake rehabilitation
Padang (ANTARA News) - The earthquake overcoming efforts in West Sumatra which will enter the stage of rehabilitation and reconstruction are hampered by data problems.
"No exact data had been gathered yet on damaged houses, causing problems to the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts ," Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Syamsul Maarif said in Padang, Monday.
Syamsul said that until now the damaged homes in the quake-hit areas in West Sumatra reached only 40 percent.
"The collection of data on Padang city and Padang Pariaman regency is on its final stages, while in the districts and cities data collection is still underway," he said.
Meanwhile for the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts required complete data and photos of the damaged houses.
"Officials are having trouble on conducting the survey, because of the owners of the damaged houses were not on hand for various reasons," he said.
To overcome these obstacles, Syamsul said that the officials will continue to be proactive in visiting the damaged houses to take pictures and their owners` signatures.
He said that the start of the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts are still unknown.
He added that the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts will be carried out after the emergency response has been completed.
The emergency response will be started if evacuation and supply of basic necessaries for the victims had been completed.
Besides, he added , the process will also involve community leaders to determine the extent of the damage of the house.
"With the participation of the indigenous council, we hope that there would not be any problem in determining the extent of damage of the houses," he said. (*)
