5 magnitude quake strikes N Sulawesi, W Sumatra
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck North Sulawesi with its epicenter 106 kilometers northeast of Bitung at a depth of 10 km, 2.34 degrees northern latitude, and 125.55 eastern longitude on Sunday at 9.25 a.m local time.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Jakarta also registered a quake measuring 5 on the Richter scale which struck West Sumatra with its epicenter 69 km southeast of Siberut, Mentawai, at a depth of 13 km, 1.58 degrees southern latitude, and 99.43 eastern longitude at 8.50 a.m local time.
The agency said the quake in Mentawai, West Sumatera, was felt up to position II and III in Padang Panjang regency.
The quake of a magnitude of more than 5 on the Richter scale, had shocked several regions in Indonesia, including a 7.3 strong tremor which struck West Southeast Maluku, and Southwest Maluku at a depth of 165 km, 6.23 degrees southern latitude, and 130.60 degrees eastern longitude, on Saturday at 11.40 p.m local time.
Then a 6.1 strong quake struck an area 176 km southwest of Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara, at a depth of 19 km, 10.16 degrees southern latitude, and 118.75 degrees eastern longitude Sunday morning at 3.54 local time.
An aftershock measured at 5.5 on the Richter scale struck east Nusatenggara with its epicenter 174 km southwest of Waingapu at a depth of 23 km, 10.1 degrees southern latitude and 118.75 eastern longitude Sunday at 4.04 a.m local time.
A tremor 5.3 strong also struck Maluku at a depth of 39 km and 151 km southwest of Tual, 6.69 degrees southern latitude, and 131.97 degrees eastern longitude on Sunday at 7.35 a.m local time.(*)
