President to sign decree on Antasari`s discharge on Monday
Bogor, W Java (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will on Monday sign a decree discharging Antasari Azhar from his post as chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), a minister said.
Speaking to the press after a meeting at President Yudhoyono`s residence in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java, on Sunday, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa said a draft of the presidential decree had been completed and would soon be signed by the president.
"One thing is clear that the draft is ready. I think it will be signed on Monday," he said.
On Thursday (Oct 8), the Attorney General`s Office notified President Yudhoyono of Antasari`s status as a defendant in the murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, a director of PT Rajawali Putra Banjaran.
The letter of notification was sent to the president coinciding with the first court session trying the Antasari case at the South Jakarta district court.
Law No. 30/2002 on the KPK stipulates that a KPK leader who has become a suspect in a criminal offense must be suspended, and one who has become a defendant in a court of law, discharged.
Two other KPK leaders, Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto, have been named suspects in the alleged abuse of power over the issuance of travel bans on businessmen Anggoro Widjojo and Djoko Tjandra.
To fill the vacant posts of the KPK leaders, President Yudhoyono issued a government regulation in lieu of law for the appointment of acting KPK leaders.
The President later appointed Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean, Waluyo, and Mas Ahmad Santosa as interim leaders of the anti-graft body.
The three took their official oath last Tuesday, a day after President Yudhoyono received and approved three candidates submitted by the team of five to fill in the vacancies. (*)
