Jakarta (ANTARA News) - It is necessary for a president to give his or her accountability to the people, a legislator said here on Saturday.

Therefore, chairman of Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDI-P) faction in the House of Representatives (DPR) Tjahyo Kumolo said it was natural that the DPR demanded fulfillment of the promises made by an Indonesian president during election campaigns on behalf of the people.

"It is the reason why the House of Representatives demands a president to fulfill his or her promises during election campaigns," Kumolo said.

He made the remark following a discourse to return the state customs and manners in the form of president accountability report every five years as was in effect during Soeharto regime, because such a forum was suitable to evaluate the government`s overall performance.

"The present government has short, medium, and long term working programs which are arranged by the government through National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), and it is what a presidential candidate campaign promises spell out," Kumolo said.

"Presidential candidate promises to the people during election campaigns are automatically the government`s working programs," Tjahyo Kumolo said.

According to him, the people through the DPR have recorded the promises, and therefore it was natural to demand the government to fulfill the promises.

In relation with the mechanism of the the government accountability, Kumolo was of the opinion that its technical matter was easy to discuss and to find out the solution.

"For the technical matter, it can be made either in People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR) session or House of Representatives and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) joint plenary session," Kumolo said.

But in reality, he said the people did need five yearly accountability to see various progresses the government had made and the obstacles in deciding the next programs.

"I think it is good for the people to think and act what is good for their country," Kumolo said.(*)
