Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale jolted the West Sumatra`s coastal regions on Friday at 11.45 am local time.

The temblor`s epicenter was located at 0.54 degrees southern latitude, and 99.57 degrees eastern longitude, around 53 km west of Pariaman, at a depth of 39 km below sea level, according to the national meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency.

The earthquake did not have the potential of triggering a tsunami but it caused Padang residents to rush out of their homes in panic.

The temblor was felt by Padang residents at the second and third levels of MMI (Modified Marcelli Intensity) and I-II MMI in Padang Panjang.
