Tokyo (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Suzuki Motor Corp. (TSE:7269) said Tuesday that it will start building a plant for small automobiles in Thailand next Monday, with production slated to begin there in March 2012.

The facility is to be built on a 650,000-sq.-meter plot in the central part of the country for 20 billion yen (US$225.96 million). In addition to assembling engines, it will be able to handle everything from pressing, welding and painting to assembly.

The factory will roll out about 10,000 1.3-liter-engine cars in the first year. Although Suzuki makes motorcycles in Thailand, this will be its first automobile production facility there.

The carmaker hopes to turn the operation into a key factory for Southeast Asia, eventually exporting vehicles to neighboring countries.
