Taipei (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - In late 2010, Taiwan will begin efforts to convert the status of its main international airport and four harbor bureaus from administrative agencies to corporations in the hope of improving their global competitiveness, an official at the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said Wednesday.

Yin Cheng-peng, director of the MOTC's Department of Aviation and Navigation, said this would allow for more flexibility in expanding business at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and the harbors in Kaohsiung, Taichung, Keelung and Hualien.

The airport company will be set up by the end of 2010, while the four harbor corporations will come into effect the following year, Yin said.

The decision was prompted by a drop in the international rankings of the airport and harbors in terms of their operational volumes over the past years, which Yin said signaled that Taiwan was losing its edge as a transportation hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
