Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA News/AFP) - Slain Islamist militant leader Noordin Mohammed Top will be buried in his childhood village in Malaysia Friday, next to the remains of his elder brother, a family representative said.
"Noordin`s remains will leave Jakarta shortly and are expected to reach Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 2:00 pm (0600 GMT) Friday and within minutes we will start the journey to Johor for the burial," Badarudin Ismail told AFP.
He said Noordin`s remains would reach the Jamek Nurul Iman mosque in the village of Kampung Melayu in the Pontian district of southern Johor state three hours later where final religious rites would be performed.
"Noordin will be buried next to his elder brother Arif Mohammed Top, who died of liver cancer less than two weeks ago," Badarudin added, saying the burial would be completed by 6:00 pm.
He said Noordin`s wife, Rahmah Rusdi, and his brother, Yahya Mohammed Top, would also be present at the burial, which will take place in the village cemetery.
The leader of a violent splinter faction of the radical Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) network, Noordin, a 41-year-old Malaysian, was killed along with several other militants at the bloody end of a nine-hour siege in Central Java three weeks ago.
He is believed to have masterminded the double suicide bombing of the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in the Indonesian capital Jakarta in July that left seven people dead.
Noordin is also widely believed to be behind a 2003 attack on the Marriott that killed 12 people, as well as the 2004 bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta and 2005 attacks on tourist restaurants on the holiday island of Bali. (*)
